Major updates to elmah.io Uptime Monitoring

While we usually describe all noticeable changes on the elmah.io Changelog, I want to dedicate a blog post for some major updates that we just released to elmah.io Uptime Monitoring.

Configurable regions

A request that we often get is the possibility of configuring which regions that should ping your endpoints. Until now, we have had 5 regions pinging your endpoints every 5 minutes. In case you develop a US-only system, you don't really care if the website is available in Australia or the other way around.

With configurable regions, you can select up to 5 regions to ping your endpoint:

As previously, when two or more regions are down, your endpoint will be considered failed. When selecting three or fewer regions, your endpoint will be marked as failed as soon as a single region fails.

Configurable regions are available on both new and existing uptime checks. All existing uptime checks already have the original 5 regions selected, but go ahead and change them if you'd like.

4 new regions

As part of making regions configurable, we decided to add four additional regions. The new regions are United States Central, United Kingdom West, Europe West, and Brazil South. The location of each region follows Microsoft Azure's data center placement.

UI improvements

We also used the possibility to go through all of the UI and make multiple improvements throughout the Uptime tab and the Root Cause view. Like including the region on all flag icons as shown here:

There's a new Explanation control available when creating and editing uptime checks, that will help you get an overview of how changes in regions and settings affect how elmah.io will monitor each endpoint:
